Gone To Texas Summer Camp

Reflecting on a Successful 6th Annual "Gone to Texas" Youth History Camp

The Washington County Historical Commission (WCHC) is proud to celebrate another highly successful year of the "Gone to Texas" Youth History Camp, held July 13–17. In a wonderful joint effort with the Boys & Girls Club of Washington County and the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site, this year’s program brought Texas history alive for 17 enthusiastic young campers.

Over the course of five action-packed days, the children engaged in hands-on activities and unique living history experiences. To provide a truly immersive and realistic view of the era, professional site staff and interpreters wore authentic period clothing, making the historical journeys even more vivid and memorable for the youth. Their journey took them through pivotal chapters of our state's heritage, with visits to:

  • San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site (the heart of Stephen F. Austin’s early colony)

  • Fanthorp Inn State Historic Site, Anderson

  • Barrington Living History Farm, at Washington-on-the Brazos State Historic Site

  • The archeological excavations at the old townsite of Washington

  • Independence Hall, at Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site

The week concluded with a special celebratory lunch where county officials, supporters, and sponsors joined the campers to celebrate their achievements.
