Cemeteries

The Cemetery Committee of the Washington County Historical Commission is dedicated to the preservation, documentation, and protection of all historic burial grounds across Washington County. In strict alignment with the Texas Historical Commission (THC) Cemetery Preservation Program, our mission is to ensure that every resting place, from established community landmarks to forgotten family plots, is treated with dignity, legally recorded, and preserved for future generations.

  • Documentation & Mapping
Locating, surveying, and recording every historic cemetery in Washington County. We work to ensure coordinates and boundaries are correctly filed with both county deed records and the Texas Historical Commission's state database to protect these sacred spaces from accidental encroachment.

  • Historic Designation Advocacy
Assisting landowners, descendants, and historical societies with the official Historic Texas Cemetery (HTC) designation process. This state-level designation helps preserve cemetery boundaries and alerts future planners and developers to the presence of a historic resource.

  • Stewardship & Preservation Education
Providing resources and guidance on the legally and historically correct ways to care for endangered cemeteries. We advocate for non-invasive preservation methods, safe clearing practices, and the protection of historic grave markers in accordance with state antiquities laws.

  • Legal Protection Awareness
Serving as a local informational resource regarding Texas burial laws. Under the Texas Health and Safety Code, all historic cemeteries, regardless of size or current condition, are protected by state law. We help the public understand the legal rights of descendants and the responsibilities of property owners.

Building a Unified Cemetery Preservation Network

The long-term survival of our historic cemeteries relies heavily on the dedicated work of individual caretakers, private landowners, and local cemetery associations. However, operating in isolation can make it difficult for single sites to overcome modern preservation hurdles, maintain visibility, or survive on independent fundraising alone.

The Cemetery Committee is currently exploring the concept of a unified county-wide network to bring these independent groups together under a shared framework. By connecting our unique burial grounds, we can amplify their historical importance and open doors to sustainable solutions that benefit every site involved.

Key Focus Areas of the Initiative:

  • Amplifying Public Interest
Connecting our county's diverse burial grounds allows us to tell a grander, cohesive story of early Texas settlement, migration, and community identity. This collective narrative naturally elevates public awareness, making our historic cemeteries highly compelling destinations for researchers, heritage travelers, and family historians.

  • Collective Funding Opportunities
Many independent cemeteries face chronic funding shortages and struggle to maintain momentum through small, routine fundraisers. A unified network allows the historical commission to explore broader, collective funding paths, regional preservation grants, and joint community initiatives that are otherwise out of reach for a single, isolated site.

  • Shared Resources & Expertise
Creating a collaborative space for local cemetery trustees, descendants, and volunteers allows us to pool technical resources, share best practices for stone maintenance, and coordinate joint preservation efforts to protect our most endangered plots.
